Les Miserables: The 10th Anniversary Dream Cast in Concert at London's Royal Albert Hall List Price: $34.98 Sale Price: $20.93 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert). Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along. The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere. --David Horiuchi DVD features The 2008 two-disc edition presents the concert on a single-sided disc (the original DVD split the concert over two sides) with optional English subtitles. It's also in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1 aspect ratio) comparied to the original's 1.33 full-screen. The second disc has Stage by Stage: Les Miserables, the hourlong documentary from 1988. Unfortunately the sound is only Dolby Digital 2.0. Early editions of the DVD had an odd omission (compared to the earlier Sony DVD)--the first 10 seconds of Gavroche's "Little People" were missing ("Good evening, dear inspector, lovely evening, my dear...")--that has now been corrected. --David Horiuchi Movie DVD |

O Brother, Where Art Thou? List Price: $13.98 Sale Price: $6.74 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
The enhanced portion contains a screensaver, links to Websites, and the ability to play the music through the computer.Genre: Soundtracks & ScoresMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 5-DEC-2000 The best soundtracks are like movies for the ears, and O Brother, Where Art Thou? joins the likes of Saturday Night Fever and The Harder They Come as cinematic pinnacles of song. The music from the Coen brothers' Depression-era film taps into the source from which the purest strains of country, blues, bluegrass, folk, and gospel music flow. Producer T Bone Burnett enlists the voices of Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Ralph Stanley, and kindred spirits for performances of traditional material, in arrangements that are either a cappella or feature bare-bones accompaniment. Highlights range from the aching purity of Krauss's "Down to the River to Pray" to the plainspoken faith of the Whites' "Keep on the Sunny Side" to Stanley's chillingly plaintive "O Death." The album's spiritual centerpiece finds Krauss, Welch, and Harris harmonizing on "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby," a gospel lullaby that sounds like a chorus of Appalachian angels. --Don McLeese |

Classical Baby 3-Pack - Music, Art & Dance List Price: $26.98 Sale Price: $13.75 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
The fine arts have a universal appeal that offers an opportunity for forging intergenerational connections. Classical Baby is a three DVD set in which each DVD focuses on a single classic art form: dance, visual art and music. Each animated program is brimming with catchy melodies, brilliant colors, and fun animated animal characters that appeal to babies and toddlers as well as famous musical pieces, revered artwork and varied dance styles that encourage adults to share their love of the arts with a special child. "The Music Show" presents musical masterpieces from artists as varied as Bach, Mozart, Villa Lobos and Bartok and runs the gamut from large orchestral pieces to opera and intimate chamber music. Animated polar bears, toddling babies and violin-playing crickets ensure that little ones are fully engaged and entertained. "The Art Show" focuses in close on masterpieces from famous artists like Monet, Hopper and Degas and includes a snowy romp through a sculpture garden showcasing works from the 2500's BC to the 20th century AD. Accompanying the images are famous musical themes, ranging from classical to jazz and ragtime, and animation that allows modern artwork to spin and encourages cute little frogs to hop right into a Monet canvas. "The Dance Show" gives free reign to the imagination with animated animal characters performing dances inspired by great choreographers like Balanchine, Robbins, and Pilobolus in styles reminiscent of classical ballet, the Broadway musical and the silver screen. Adults may laugh aloud when animated sheep dance "Sheep to Sheep" ala Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, but the beauty is that a classic moment has been shared and a connection forged between the generations. (Ages 6 months to 4 years) --Tami Horiuchi An educational program for children featuring the musical works of great composers from Bach to Copland, great works of art, and dances from George Ba |

The Fox and the Hound (A Walt Disney Classic) [VHS] List Price: $24.99 Sale Price: $2.50 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
The Fox and the Hound marked the last collaboration between Disney's older artists, including three of the "Nine Old Men" (Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and Woolie Reitherman), and the young animators who would make the record-breaking films of the '90s. Based on a book by Daniel P. Mannix, the film tells the story of a bloodhound puppy and a fox kit who begin as friends but are forced to become enemies. Tod and Copper barely establish their friendship before Copper begins his training as hunting dog. Unfortunately, neither character develops much of a personality, which makes it difficult to care about them. The screen comes alive near end of the film, when Tod and Copper have to join forces to fight off an enormous bear. It had been years since Disney produced a sequence with this kind of feral power--and years would pass before they surpassed it. The Fox and the Hound ranks as one of the studio's lesser efforts, but it suggests that better films were soon to follow. (Ages 5 and older) --Charles Solomon |

Riverdance - The Show [VHS] List Price: $21.96 Sale Price: $9.55 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
Riverdance--The Show is a cultural phenomenon that defies criticism for the enthusiastic and leaves everyone else scratching their heads. The wonderfully talented cast, headed by the Riverdance Irish Dance Company, bewitchingly spins (and stomps) its Celtic folk choreography featuring numerous breathless solos by Michael Flatley (since departed) and Jean Butler. The mellifluous Riverdance Orchestra boasts Davy Spillane, who coaxes plaintive lamentations out of a peculiar instrument that resembles a bagpipe in a metal leg brace. For Enya fans, there is the sound-alike choral group Anuna, who casts a similarly New Age-style vocal spell. Also thrown into the mix are such disparate folk traditions as American gospel and Spanish flamenco. Though it's only 70 minutes long, Riverdance is repetitive by half. But judging from the ecstatic audience ovations and the continued foot-stomping during and after the curtain calls, too much is still not enough. --Richard Natale |

Richard Simmons Dance Your Pants Off! [VHS] List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $6.58 Average Rating: ![]() |
|
Richard Simmons, the great motivator, presents another light-intensity, low-impact, high-energy workout in the style of his popular Sweatin' to the Oldies series. Again live music is the focus--this time 1980s dance hits such as "Celebration," "Flashdance," "Gloria," "She Works Hard for the Money," and "Call Me." Just like in the Sweatin' videos, Simmons leads a large class of people of both genders and all shapes and sizes--all having the time of their lives dancing, singing, and cheering (their noisiness may grate on you after a while). Richard wears his signature shorts and tank top, and his followers wear multicolored casual clothes. The message is that it doesn't matter how you look or how much you weigh--just show up and dance! The dance-style choreography is matched to the music, but no moves require much coordination or memory. Simmons barely cues the changes--just watch and follow. This tape is a lot of fun, especially if you remember this music well enough to sing along! At the end of the tape, the performers dance down the center while we read their names and the amount of weight they've lost. Several have lost more than 100 pounds, and one woman has lost 282 pounds! (No, that's not a misprint.) Simmons is to be applauded for making exercise accessible and enjoyable to a whole population of people who didn't know that workouts could be fun. --Joan Price |

Art news from Art Calendr
Art news isn't featured much but now with the election in process, whichever party leads the next government, the key issue for arts will be funding as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport faces budget cuts in 2011-12.

With the UK general election taking place on 6 May, the governing Labour Party's election manifesto includes detailed commitments to the arts, unlike that of the centre-right Conservative opposition. Indeed it figures as one of the "50 steps" which the Labour Party promises for a "fairer" Britain—the summary of 50 national commitments which conclude the manifesto.

The party states it will give "operational independence for major museums and galleries, with more lottery funding returning to the arts, sport and culture after 2012". To implement this, new legislation will ensure "managerial and financial autonomy" for national museums.
In a surprise move, Labour also says in the manifesto it will "give public institutions new rights to borrow works of art from the national collection, so that more people can benefit from access to our national artistic heritage.'' This is a new commitment, and although very vaguely worded, it refers to the Government Art Collection. The manifesto also includes a renewed commitment to free admission to national museums.
The Conservatives have only a single sentence on the arts in their manifesto. This promises that the proportion of National Lottery funding going to the arts will be reinstated to the original 20%. Previously, the Conservatives had also promised more independence for national museums, although this does not figure in their manifesto.
The Liberal Democratic manifesto is the most detailed of any of the three on the arts. It promises to "maintain free entry" to national museums, to "open up the Government Art Collection for greater public use,'' and to "reform" the National Lottery by changing the tax system to benefit the arts.
However, whichever party firms the next government on 7 May, the key issue for arts will be funding. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will almost certainly face budget cuts in 2011-12, and the question then will be how DCMS will share out to the organisations which it funds.
